Dr. Gary Marcus, director of the NYU Infant Center, Professor of Psychology at NYU, editor of the Norton Psychology Reader, and author of 3 books on the development of the mind, talks with Dr. Michael Laitman about evolution, free choice, selfishness and education.

Here’s an extract from the conversation:

Michael Laitman: School should not only turn children into engineers, or physicians, or economists, or maybe lawyers. First of all, they have to come out with values toward their environment, and here is where we run up against a problem that is not really up to the teachers.

Gary Marcus: I totally agree with that. I think part of teaching children about the broader picture is really to understand the limits of their own minds. We don’t really teach them about what it is to be a human being, or the limits of the human mind, the ways in which we can be selfish…

Hello,
This article is really interesting. I believe myself in education but not the “old system” which feed children like geese. Anything, even nonsense can be fed to the poor child. What Rabbi Laitman proposes is what we need: connecting people, children to all other human beings all over the world. In contrast, I did not follow Dr. Marcus’ discourse, very materialistic or too scientific. More money for research? We do not need more money, we need more love of others as when you have love you can cope with any problem. The teachers of our children, are the people who should change and learn and realize how the world functions, the cogwheels which they should be aware. The problem lies with these teachers: are they capable of teaching? what are they giving to children? Do they have the right, the correct vision of the world? I am afraid most of them have not. Change the teachers. Change the children by helping them, to see the beauty of giving to others, bestowing permanently and enjoying it.. Dr. Laitman said much less than Dr. Marcus but what he expressed was the most truthful ideas I read. Please excuse my English.
